The criminal justice reforms and commitment to repairing harms related to past prohibition of cannabis are soon to be a present-day reality. Virginia is the first Southern state to take the path towards legal adult use cannabis. It is unlikely to be the last.
Legislators in New Mexico have finalized a bill that establishes a regulatory framework for legalizing adult use cannabis sales. The bill heads to Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham’s desk, where she is expected to sign it soon.
Governor Cuomo signed The Marijuana Revenue and Taxation Act (MRTA) into law, legalizing adult use and possession of cannabis immediately. The bill also establishes the Office of Cannabis Management, which will launch and manage the regulatory system for the commercial cannabis market in New York.
A bipartisan group of lawmakers in Wyoming have introduced a bill to legalize and regulate cannabis this week. Polling showed a majority of Wyoming residents support cannabis legalization, shortly after two neighboring states legalized cannabis in 2020.

Following voters passing a ballot measure back in November, Governor Phil Murphy has signed three bills into law, which legalizes adult use cannabis in the state of New Jersey. The legislation creates a commission tasked with issuing regulations by June this year.
